Has bookies' favourite Cher ruined her chances? Teen suffers throat infection at crucial moment on X Factor
She is without doubt the bookies' favourites to win this year's X Factor.
But a throat infection could have cost Cher Lloyd as the heartbroken chart hopeful broke down sobbing while performing for Cheryl Cole during the judges' houses stage of the show.
And while many had assumed she would sail through to the live performances, her failure to perform has left her future in doubt.
The 17-year-old began complaining of a sore throat hours before her performance in front of Cheryl and her friend, record producer Will.I.Am and spoke on camera about seeing 'white stuff' on her tonsils.
Barely a few bars into her song, Cher began to break down, speaking the words rather than singing.
Soon the distraught teen had stopped.
A sympathetic Cheryl, who also battled illness during her time on Popstars: The Rivals and has been one of Cher's biggest supporters since her first audition, gave her a hug, dried her tears, and encouraged her to have another go.
But Cher couldn't cope, stopping moments into the song, which saw her far from top form.
'Do you want to come back later?' asked a concerned Cheryl.
But Cher whispered to her idol Cheryl: 'I'm done now, I'm done,' before turning and walking out.
Will.i.am tried to put himself into her shoes.
'Wow, I'm trying.. I'm 16 years old.'
The teen, from Malvern, Worcestershire, has already faced considerable obstacles in her journey to the X Factor.
Her troubled background includes several relatives who have had brushes with the law.
In 2001 one relative was jailed for six years for grevious bodily harm with intent and another admitted actual bodily harm after beating up a woman in the same incident, The People is reporting.
It claims another relative was banned for driving for three years after being caught drink driving. It was apparently his second driving ban in three months.
